Years ago, during my time in seminary, I came across a comprehensive book on church evangelism, titled “Evangelism Through the Local Church.” One chapter stood out to me: “The Church God Uses in Evangelism.” It was a powerful challenge for the church to be used by God to reach others with the Gospel. Now, years later, the need is more urgent than ever. With over half the population of Alabama lacking a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we cannot afford to be complacent. The hour is late, and the mission is clear. We must refocus our churches on the priority of evangelism.
A Church God Uses Is:
1. Open to Change:
Evangelism requires flexibility. A church stuck in tradition can miss divine opportunities. God sometimes works through new methods to deliver the timeless message of the Gospel.
2. Open to Lay Initiatives:
Evangelism isn’t the sole responsibility of pastors. The most effective churches empower every believer to be a witness in their unique sphere of influence.
3. Walking by Faith, Not by Sight:
Evangelistic churches trust God to work even when results aren’t immediately visible. They step out in obedience, believing that He honors their boldness.
4. Talking About Jesus Outside Church Walls:
Real impact happens not just on Sundays but in everyday conversations — at the grocery store, at work, at school, and in neighborhoods.
5. Committed to Training:
Churches that value reaching the lost equip their members so they can courageously and consistently share their faith.
6. Willing to Love Those Who Are Different:
God’s love crosses all cultural, racial, economic, and social boundaries. Evangelistic churches take the Good News, in love, to all people.
7. Seeking the Holy Spirit’s Help:
Human effort cannot bring the dead to life. The church God uses pleads for the power of the Holy Spirit, knowing He alone convicts and converts.
8. Practicing Shared Leadership:
Evangelistic churches cultivate teams. They value the gifts of the entire Body of Christ, raising leaders who multiply mission.
9. Engaged in Dynamic Worship:
Worship fuels witness. When people encounter the presence of God, not only are people compelled to share that joy, but God draws others to experience this hope.
10. Always Centered on Jesus:
Ultimately, evangelism isn’t about programs or personalities; it’s about Jesus. A church that keeps Him at the center should naturally overflow with His message.
